WEEK 5 - WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 11TH
Ernst Fenelon Jr. spoke about how education in prison facilities is working in the midst of a pandemic. He also spoke about how he spent 14 years in prison himself and now spends his life as an advocate and life coach for people in prison.
WEEK 4 - WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 28TH
Professor Katharine Tinto spoke about prisoner re-entry and the role police misconduct plays in incarceration. Professor Tinto oversees the safety council at UC Irvine and explained what a defunded UCI police department would look like.
WEEK 3 - WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 21ST
Director Reiter and Professor Seron spoke about LIFTED: the new UCI initiative to launch a Bachelor’s Degree program in prisons. This program would allow people who are incarcerated right now to work towards an academically rigorous degree in Sociology. This is a progressive step forward when it comes to equal access to higher education for all.
WEEK 2 - WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14TH
Vice Provost spoke about the deliberate de-feminization of transgender women in prison. She gracefully allowed PEP at UCI to share her articles. The talk was not recorded for a more authentic experience and discussion.
WEEK 1 - WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7TH
This meeting served as an introduction to Prison Education Project at UCI (PEP at UCI) and our mission. In addition, board members and the faculty advisor were introduced. We opened the floor to questions as well.
